Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Mike Tyson Eye April Showdown in Africa

Two of boxing's most iconic names are headed for a collision course. Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have reportedly agreed to an exhibition bout this April in the Congo a matchup so improbable it feels ripped from a fever dream, yet increasingly real.

The rumors, which have circulated for months, gained credibility when Tyson confirmed the fight himself. Asked by TMZ Sports whether the bout was still on, the former heavyweight champion didn't hesitate. "You think I give that up? I was minding my business. He challenged me." He went further: "This is something neither the world nor I ever thought would or could happen."

And yet, here we are.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Mike Tyson Eye April Showdown in Africa

Tyson, 58, is coming off a unanimous decision loss to YouTube star-turned-boxer Jake Paul last November a sobering reminder that time spares no one, even Iron Mike. Mayweather, meanwhile, last appeared in an August 2024 exhibition against John Gotti III that ended in a no-decision, adding another footnote to a post-retirement career built more on spectacle than competition. The 49-year-old, who closed out his professional career at a flawless 50-0 in 2017, has never been short on confidence. "I've been doing this for 30 years, and there hasn't been a single fighter that can tarnish my legacy," he said in a statement last September. "If I'm going to do something, it's going to be big and it's going to be legendary."

The Congo setting is no accident it carries unmistakable echoes of the 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle," when Muhammad Ali reclaimed the heavyweight title from George Foreman on African soil. Whether Tyson vs. Mayweather can approach that moment in historical weight is another question entirely, but the symbolism is deliberate and potent.

An exact date in April has yet to be locked in, and ticket and broadcast details remain unannounced. What's clear is that the boxing world however skeptically is watching.
